Regiments Past & Present
|
Anyone interested in the history of the Canadian Army will thoroughly enjoy this book. The book focuses on the regiment component of the army and explains its function, tradition and history from Canada's colonial days to the present. As indicated by the author, a regiment's status, spirit and legacy are defined through battles in which it has participated. David Bercuson does an admirable job of correlating selective regiments with key battles fought throughout the history of Canada. Detailed reviews of each battle give the reader a feeling for the courage, devotion and sacrifice that members of the various regiments displayed when defending the country or fighting for freedom. The appendices include summaries of active and historical regiments which will likely be of interest as well.
The only criticism to be made is that maps are not included to assist the reader in determining a battle's geographic location or a regiment's position in the line; otherwise a top rating (5 stars) would be given. A very informative book which every Canadian should read.
