Editorial Reviews:
Twelve-year-old May Amelia is too busy chasing sheep, fishing for salmon, and keeping pace with the antics of her seven Finnish brothers to bother wearing a dress or scrubbing behind her ears. Unfortunately, she's being pressured to clean up her act. "It seems like everyone is conspiring to make me a Proper Young Lady," she observes in frustration. "I do not think being a proper Young Lady sounds like any fun at all."

The old-fashioned language in this historical novel seems strained at times, and the quirky use of capital letters is an unnecessary distraction, but this book is still a lot of fun. Why? For one thing, the story is set in the far, untamed reaches of the West at the turn of the 20th century, and offers encounters with Chinook Indians, dark forests, and the twists and turns of the Nasel River. And then there is May Amelia--as headstrong as rushing water, and the only female born on this stretch of the river since her family can remember. She is known (when she's not deep into trouble) as the Miracle. Will this feisty female ever settle down and become the little lady everyone expects her to be? Will her pregnant mother give birth to another girl so May Amelia can finally have a sister? You'll have to read the whole story to find out. (Ages 10 and older) --Maria Dolan

It's a tough life out there but nothing Amelia can't handle
OUR ONLY MAY AMELIA
May Amelia lives on the Nasel River in Washington. May Amelia has seven brothers and one cousin, Kaarlo, who lives with them. Amelia and Kaarlo have some clashes when she plays some trick on him. Then she gets throne in the pigpen. Other frightful events happen that are like that Her mother is going to have a baby and May wants it to be a girl so bad because she's the only girl on the Nasel. Her closest brother Wilbert always sticks up for her and goes on adventures with her to places: Baby Island, Astoria and swimming in the Nasel. He even teaches her how to shoot a gun. Will everything change when cruel Grandma Patients who hates every living thing?

I totally enjoyed this book because it's marvelous to read books where girls have lots of spunk. For me the best scene in the book is when she stands up to her mean old granny. Even when she knows that the consequences are terrifying. I like this scene best because it takes lots of courage to do that. I also live in Washington and it's interesting to go to the spot where this took place. I felt so honored and special that I could be to that very place. Kids and gown-ups that have lots of spunk should read this.

Our Only May Amelia
The unconventional writing style and the unique setting of 1899 Washington state makes this story feel different from other pioneer stories, and the ethnic group of the first generation Finnish family is unique, too. The 1st person present tense and atypical punctuation and capitalization forms intensify the originalility of this story. May Amelia is an appealing character because of her courage and independance, especially in the time era this book is set. The universal feelings May Amelia struggles with draw the reader into the story. "Our Only May Amelia" lingers on well after the last page.
May Amelia is Cool
This is an excellent book...I read it when I was in 4th grade and I enjoyed it a lot! The only thing I dont like is that it doesn't have quotation marks and it is hard to tell when someone is talking. Otherwise, it is a good book about a 12 year old girl who has 7 brohters (Including Kaalo, a cousin). She goes on adventures and it is really exciting!
Great Historical Fiction selection
Our May Amelia, a book by Jennifer L. Holm is a great selection for a Historical fiction book. When May Amelia is coming full circle into an adolescent, she finds her pre-teen years natural to be a rough tomboy rather than a pretty young lady. The story begins with May Amelia introducing her siblings, and a brief description of her infamous boy-like appearance. After a lot of disapproval, May Amelia is accepted as the adventurous young lady she is to her family.
I really enjoyed this book. The meaning is very clear: do not judge a book by its cover-character counts. Amelia's despair of making her father and grandmother pleased causes her to lose hope. Although her grandmother and father tend to disapprove of her unlady-like mannerisms, her brother Wilbert shows support and lets her know that he loves and cares for her no matter what. Wibert, her brother, is a very important person who helps May in the times of non-conformity. Amelia's journey of finding herself is essential.
This book was a great story about a rebellious young girl who was adventurous in the pioneering days. Our May Amelia would be a perfect book to promote young-readers and create a valuable family lesson plan.
It deserves 5 stars.
It deserves 5 stars. Because it tells you things about her that are sometimes important in life. I think you should read this book if you like adventures, and mystery.
