Scary!

Abarat: Days of Magic, Nights of War is by Clive Barker, who has written some very scary books for adults, far too scary to be things I would ever read. But being a children's book, Abarat seemed safe. Wrong. The second of four in the series, this follows the ongoing exploits of Candy Quackenbush (formerly of Chickentown, Minnesota) in the lands of Abarat. Candy (shades of Candyman?) discovers here that she is more than she appears, uncovering abilities and qualities well beyond those of the average Minnesotan, abilities that might explain why exactly the evil Christopher Carrion hungers so relentlessly to capture her. This is lush, fully realized fantasy supported by 125 of Barker's colourful, menacing paintings in this volume (and an exhaustive glossary). Disney has reportedly bought the rights to a film adaptation of the first book; look for Barker to join J.K. Rowling and Lemony Snicket in the child-crossover market.
