Customer Reviews:
Don't live to eat

Dr. Fuhrman's book is very well written and easy to read. It is much more informative and detailed than many other books on diet and nutrition. I have been on this diet for three months now. I found it rejuvenating and healthy. I personally have lost 35 lbs while on this diet and am only 15 lbs away from my ideal weight.

It is a good book, bringing good results. I recommend it to anyone and everyone. It reminds me of onther very good volume titled "Can we live 150 year" where the author constantly reminds the readers about "Eating to live instead of living to eat". I think reading both books and taking the best of each is the best idea.
An M.D. Who Finally Gets It
As a Registered Holistic Nutritional Consultant, I work with people everyday with a variety of health issues and nutritional needs. Although "Eat To Live" looks like it might just be another diet book - it's far from it.

Dr. Joel Fuhrman is a Medical Doctor who works from his practice in New Jersey, USA. He's the kind of doctor other doctors send their patients to. He's not a pill pusher - far from it. His goal is to get his patients off drugs and living a healthier lifestyle by addressing their nutritional needs and getting exercise. His message is that if we eat foods that are nutrient dense, yet low in calories, we will not only lose weight, but because our nutrient needs are met, we will have loads of ammunition against obesity related diseases. Nutrient deficiency and obesity are the biggest contributors to disease in the world today.

I bought the book and got so excited that I couldn't read it fast enough to absorb everything, so I bought the DVD too. The DVD is a one of Fuhrman's lectures that he delivers to a room of doctors... very informative.

I teach at The Canadian School of Natural Nutrition here in Halifax - and have found a lot of the information in this book helpful in delivering my nutritional information. I use his messages when I do workshops and lectures.

It's so refreshing to see a medical doctor who has studied nutrition and understands the importance of preventative rather than allopathic medicine. Who says there's no money in prevention.

This is a great book - that I would recommend most definately.

HEALTH = NUTRIENTS / CALORIES
As Dr. Fuhrman is the first to admit, "this is really a health and longevity book disguised as a weight-loss book". And he makes clear, that if your body is starved of micro-nutrients ( vitamins, minerals, phyto-chemicals, and fibre ), deprivation diets are very unlikely to work long-term. Also, people dealing with food addictions should be prepared to feel worse before they feel better.

First, I generally give people a copy of The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health, and then this one.

It's pretty sad, but within our obese North American population, and in our bizarre food culture, the most effective way to market a book about superior nutrition, is to appeal to the almost universal desire, and seemingly never-ending struggle within the borders of Canada and the United States, to lose weight.
Getting a Second Chance
I've only just begun this program, but I have many friends who are raving about this book, so I am rating it for them as well. I'm very excited to get my health back after 6 years of chronic illness and overweight.

As far as the earlier review titled "diets don't work", ask any fitness professional, and they will tell you good health is based on 80% diet and 20% fitness. It is not sound advice to propose that people should only exercise and not worry about what they eat. This is not only about being 'thin'; it's about all around health. Perhaps they were confusing the word 'diet' with proper nutritional planning.

I advise everyone to do their own research before taking anyone's word at face value in regards to personal health care.

It really is life-changing.
Rather than repeat many of the reviewers of this book, I simply want to add this book has the potential change one's life. I read that in one of the reviews before I bought this book, and I though that's rather silly, it's almost sad that a diet book can change someone's life.

Six months later, I now wholeheartedly agree. My girlfriend is now completely vegetarian and I eat meat only one or twice a week. Prior to this I would eat meat once or twice a day. If you told me six months ago that in half a year I would be for all intent and purpose be a vegetarian, I would have laughed and said that's impossible. I like to workout a lot, where will I get my protein from.

Well, I still workout a lot and I get most of my protein from soy products. I've managed to maintain my muscle and still loose 30 pounds, most of it coming off in the first couple months. My girlfriend has lost a similar amount.

It's worth mentioning that Dr. Fuhrman's diet is pretty strict, and it's a very dramatic change coming over from the typical American diet. He talks about making the commitment, and that's very important, but I think it's also important to be realistic and realize that it may take a while to fully adopt all of the eating habits he proposes. Even now, while others probably think all I eat is rabbit-food, I realize that we still not following his diet perfectly. We'll have buns with our black bean burgers, but just try to make sure they're not refined. And I'm not too concerned about it. The weight is staying off and we feel great.

So do yourself a favor and buy this book. While you're at it, buy your loved ones all a copy too, as I've recently started doing. If the thought of being a vegetarian scares you, don't let it. Dr. Fuhrman offers plenty of recipes with meat in them, so you'll have plenty to eat, and you might be surprised to see that it's possible to really go without meat in your diet. You'll also sleep better at night (and probably live longer) knowing that the stuff you're putting in your body is a lot better than all of your friends who are on Atkins or the South Beach diet.
