Must Have Book for Beginner and Expert iPhone Developers
|
The iPhone Developer's Cookbook: Building Applications with the iPhone SDK is an instant classic and the single best technical book I have read this year.
Whether you are new to developing for the Apple platform, coming to it because you want to create iPhone applications or you are an experienced developer The iPhone Developer's Cookbook: Building Applications with the iPhone SDK by Erica Sadun gives you the tools needed to be instantly productive.
If you are a novice programmer the book takes you from the development environment through all the important features of the SDK. Along with succinct USEFUL examples there are many hints that would take a lot of research to find and assimilate. While the source code is available I would recommend novices type in the beginning examples at least as it's often better to learn that way.
If you are an intermediate to advanced developer with experience developing for OS X and/or have worked with the iPhone SDK The iPhone Developer's Cookbook is structured in such a way that you can easily jump to an SDK area you are having trouble with or need more information on. It's a lot like the Nutshell book series in that way.
I would recommend you have some familiarity with at least C or C++ but preferably Objective-C as all the examples are in Objective-C, the iPhone's native language. If you need to learn Objective-C first there are many good references for that but experienced C/C++ developers should have little trouble learning the basics of Objective-C while reading this book.
As a personal teaching aid the book is designed to be used with XCode and a device so you can work with the examples in real-time. There are so many nice little touches in the book that I can't write about them all but one I really appreciate is all the projects are built upon the starting example so you only have to worry about provisioning 1 program to your device saving tons of clutter and add/remove tasks.
In a nutshell The iPhone Developer's Cookbook: Building Applications with the iPhone SDK is like having an expert personal instructor or mentor leading you through real world tutorials and being there once you get going to clarify things that crop up down the road. It won't write the programs for you but it will give you a solid base to work from.
The iPhone Developer's Cookbook: Building Applications with the iPhone SDK
It really is deserving of 5-Stars.
Cheers,
Christopher

Love it!

This is a very comprehensive starting point for aspiring iPhone developers.
Through practice, the basic and more advanced programming logic will become second nature.
It will also give some a nice introduction to Objective-C 2.0.
Thanks for the great book Erica.
